Transmission & Distribution in Europe

The shift towards a decarbonised, electrified and more resilient energy system across Europe is creating unprecedented investment requirements for electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure. By 2030, close to €600 billion in capital expenditure is expected to be needed to expand, upgrade and digitalise power grids throughout Europe. As a result, the sector is becoming a key enabler of the energy transition and an increasingly attractive long-term investment theme.
Electricity networks facing structural challenges
The rapid growth of electrification and renewable energy is transforming Europe’s power system at a historic pace. Electricity consumption is projected to rise substantially over the coming years, while the increasing penetration of intermittent and decentralised renewable generation is adding new operational complexity to grid management.
At the same time, much of Europe’s existing network infrastructure is ageing and no longer fully suited to current and future energy needs. This combination of rising demand, evolving generation patterns and ageing assets is placing significant pressure on transmission and distribution networks, reinforcing the urgency of large-scale modernisation programmes.

Execution, not funding, will determine success
Europe’s electricity grid sector is entering one of its most significant investment cycles in more than 50 years. Annual investment levels have already surpassed €70 billion and are expected to increase further in the coming years. Strong capital commitments, supportive regulation, and growing industrial capabilities are driving the expansion of transmission and distribution infrastructure, the digitalisation of networks, and the integration of renewable energy sources.
Yet the challenge extends beyond financing. Grid projects across Europe continue to face supply chain constraints, permitting complexities, and shortages in specialised industrial capacity. As investment programmes accelerate, the ability to execute projects efficiently and at scale is becoming the key factor for success.

A compelling opportunity for consolidation and growth
The fragmented structure of Europe’s distribution network market presents a significant opportunity for investors. While the transmission segment remains highly concentrated, the distribution landscape is made up of numerous regional and mid-sized operators across different markets.

This fragmentation creates favourable conditions for consolidation strategies and platform-building initiatives. By combining multiple assets and expanding geographic reach, investors can create larger, more integrated businesses with enhanced operational capabilities. Increased scale can also support valuation multiple expansion, creating attractive opportunities for value creation through buy-and-build strategies.
